CAN J1939 Network

SAE J1939 protocol, is communication protocol “high level” and used on CAN bus. It’s using the CAN 2.0B norme, including identifed encoded messages on 29bits.

This protocol specifies the CAN use and the different OSI Layers ( 3 to 7). The main applications  are Trucks, Heavy vehicules applications and special vehicules.

J1939 is also a basic protocol  ISO11783/ISOBUS (agriculture) et NMEA2000 (naval), which are more applicative layer.

NMEA200 : Standard for Serial-Data Networking of Marine Electronic Devices

NMEA Interface Standards are intended to serve the public interest by facilitating interconnection and interchangeability of equipment digital data, minimizing misunderstanding and confusion between manufacturer’s equipment and provide safe and reliable communication for the boat and boater.

NMEA2000® standard contains the requirements of a serial data communications network to inter-connect marine electronic equipment on vessels. The standard describes a low-cost moderate capacity bi-directional, multi-transmitter/multi-receiver instrument network to interconnect marine electronic devices.

Réseaux CANOpen

CANopen is a applicative layer (OSI model : Layer 7), Originally  for bus data like  CAN (Controller area network) working out as Real time. Others includes CANopen, or (EtherCAT, Powerlink) showing up the interest of the industry for this communication area. It’s used into several areas like Automotive, Agriculture, industrial ( lift, stairs,  wheel chairs, motion control) and medical  ( X Ray, Operating room).  CANOpen is well known for a efficient and economic solution.

CANopen is part of the CAL applicative by  Philips Medical Systems ; CAL Layer uses the same services and protocol. A master is managing slaves. The speed can reach up to 1 Mbit/s.
