Asset management for improved production processes

Fieldbuses in the process industry

Digital field devices deliver an ever-increasing amount of data that provides sound insights into plant condition and based on which modern asset management can be carried out. To ensure a continuous data flow beyond the analog measured value, digital communication protocols have become established in the process industry in addition to the analog 4..20 mA current loop. The three most important are HART, Foundation Fieldbus (FF) and PROFIBUS. While FF is widely used in the USA, PROFIBUS has become the fieldbus protocol of choice in the European process industry. It allows the long cable runs required in process automation and the PROFIBUS PA profile can be used in hazardous areas. And by supporting digital communication and manufacturer-independent device exchange, it offers the best conditions for controlling, monitoring and streamlining production processes.

Ethernet/IP for modern asset management

But fieldbuses are not the end of the story. Ethernet-based control systems are available for innovative asset management. They offer higher bandwidths for data transmission and enable the integration of Industry 4.0 applications. By integrating these PLCs, existing plants in the process industry can be expanded to include modern and highly functional segments.

This is where the combined solutions come in that Softing Industrial has developed with its partners Schneider Electric and Endress+Hauser:

Softing’s “epGate” connects PROFIBUS PA and DP devices from Endress+Hauser with the M580 Ethernet/IP control system and the Control Expert engineering tool from Schneider Electric. The benefits are obvious:

  • The required investment is manageable, since it is not the entire plant that has to be modernized. The existing PROFIBUS PA and DP segments can be integrated into a modern Ethernet/IP network architecture without any changes.
  • Gateway integration is done quickly, either by using the generated EDS (Electronic Data Sheet) file (exported from the Embedded Web Server) or through the Schneider Electric Advanced Generic DTM (Device Type Manager) installed by default in EcoStruxure™ Control Expert engineering tool.
  • The Asset Management of the field devices can be easily realized via FDT (Field Device Type) frame applications such as FieldCare from Endress+Hauser with an included CommDTM (Communication Device Type Manager).

PROFINET Switch 8 Port, managed M12 – IP67

The managed PROFINET-Switch supports PROFINET according to Conformance Class B and offers transmission security through ring redundancy as an MRP client.

One of the most important functions of a PROFINET-Switch is the prioritizing of the PROFINET frame traffic in the machine network. The managed switch can differentiate whether the frame is a web query, an FTP file transmission, a media stream, or a PROFINET frame. In the case of a high transmission load, the important frames can thus be prioritized in order to prevent frame losses.
With a GSDML file you can integrate the switch into your automation environment in the usual way.
The supported PROFINET protocols, such as LLPD, DCP, or even diagnosis alarms, can be easily configured and administered.

With its protection class IP67 and temperature range from -40 °C to +75 °C, the PROFINET Switch 8 Port, IP67 is ideal for use in rough industrial conditions. The product is ideally suited for installation without a control cabinet and therefore offers a wide range of applications.

CAN Gateway

  • X-Analyser includes a gateway component that can be used to duplicate frames from one CAN network on to another. This feature requires you to have two CAN channels configured in your project, you can then configure which channel to receive frames on and which channel to transmit them back out on.


  • X-Analyser has support for the CANopen higher layer protocol which is used for industrial automation and other off-highway applications. There are two main areas of support for which you must have the X-Analyser Professional edition; message/signal interpretation and message transmission.

Filter Editor

  • Use the filter editor to filter CAN frames on the Raw Data Trace they can be filtered by; Channel, Data, Data Length, Direction, Frame ID, Frame Type and Timestamp. These can be used with a combination of logic functions to define certain criteria for Filtering.


  • With a CAN database loaded signals can be configured to show as gauges. With a combination of gauge styles available and gauge values can be defined such as; Min and Max values and Minor and Major Step Intervals.

Interactive Generator

  • The Interactive Generator (IG) allows the user to use a CANdb (*.dbc) file to interactively transmit CAN messages onto a system using the signals physical values that will automatically be converted to raw CAN data. Running in parallel with X-Analyser, the IG allows the user to create and change CAN messages on the fly. Transmission of a message can be carried out by user interaction (i.e. by clicking on a button) or by a timer with resolution 5ms which allows periodic transmitting.

  • The ISO 15765 transport layer can be used to easily create a OBD Mode 3 request frame and also displays the response as Mode 3 DTC’s in Hexadecimal format.

J1939 Signals Database

  • pic X-analyser Professional Edition comes with a J1939 database where signals can be selected and source address defined so they can be displayed in a Signals Panel, Gauge or Scope.

Object Transmitter

  • The Object Transmitter can be used to create CAN frames and transmit them onto a network. Standard and Extended ID’s can be selected, also Transmitters can be sent periodically by selecting Auto-Repeat and defining the time interval in milliseconds.


  • With a CAN database loaded signals can be selected for the scope to displayed and plotted. Points on the scope can be selected to show the value at a certain time. The scope can also be exported to CSV format to be opened and worked with in Excel.

Signal Editor

  • The signals editor can be used to create parts of a CAN database on the fly, what’s created can be configure to a signals panel, gauges or scope.

Signal Panel

  • With a CAN database loaded signals can be configured to the signals panel to show physical values. The signals can be displayed numerically or symbolically.

Signals search function

  • CAN databases when loaded can be searched using the signals search function. Quotation marks can also be used to search for a whole name i.e. “Engine RPM”.

Symbolic and Numeric values

  • X-analyser can now have the same signals displayed more than once on a signals panel, gauge or scope. Within a signals panel the same signal can be displayed more than once with each as a symbolic or numeric value.

UDS DTC Reader

  • X-analyser now has a UDS DTC reader, once configured in the transport protocol for the UDS DTC reader. It shall read and clear UDS DTC’s with the option to set the DTC Status Mask so different ECU’s can be read.

The EZ Gateway Modbus to BACnet (FS-EZX-MOD-BAC) is an easy-to-use, high-performance building and industrial automation protocol gateway for integrators to interface Modbus devices, such as power meters, flow meters, and other Modbus-based controllers, to BACnet networks in commercial buildings, campuses, and industrial facilities. Innovative Features

The dual-port BACnet Router has two RS-485 ports, enabling connection to up to 64 BACnet devices without the use of additional line drivers. Using a BACnet router frees up valuable RS-485 ports on expensive BACnet Controllers and reduces the cost of connecting BACnet MS/TP devices to a BACnet/IP backbone. Compared to single-port BACnet routers, our dual-port BACnet router can reduce the cost of device connectivity or double the speed of connected devices (half the response time).

As our entry-level and cost-effective BACnet solution, the single-port BACnet Router has one RS-485 port, enabling connection to up to 32 BACnet devices without the use of additional line drivers.

DeviceFind™, our unique discovery feature, allows the integrator to discover all the BACnet devices connected to the router with one push of a button, minimizing time required for successful commissioning. Complementing this feature is our diagnostic FieldServer Toolbox, which allows the user or integrator to view the status of and diagnose all the routers on the network.

The fully compliant, top quality BACnet stack helps reduce troubleshooting time. An MDIX module makes it possible to use any Ethernet cable for commissioning and installation. DHCP automatically obtains IP settings from your network.

The BACnet Router includes NAT support with a secondary BACnet/IP connection for routing between public and private networks. A BACnet Broadcast Management Device (BBMD) allows for connection between different subnets. Familiar, web-based configuration makes the system easy to use.

Modbus TCP Network Diagnostics Independent from Controller and Control Room

The TH LINK for Modbus TCP diagnostics tool makes use of a controller-independent access to monitor Modbus networks. The diagnostic data is collected in networks comprising up to 254 nodes, and made available to users through the TH SCOPE software application. TH LINK ModbusTCP is easy to use and can be integrated without interfering with the operation of existing installations.
